PICK YOUR PATH TO HEALTH
HIPP'S "SISTA" PROJECT
HIPP’s certified “SISTA” Facilitators implemented the first of five sessions to kick-off the science-based, CDC approved project, sponsored in part by the Clark County Health District Office of AIDS, at Cambridge Community Center, 3900 Cambridge Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, on Saturday, August 23, 2005. SISTA is a peer-led program specifically designed to prevent HIV infection among African- American young women, however, the workshops are not exclusive and all are welcome. AIDS is killing too many African-American women. Over 50% of the women with AIDS are African-American women. Although participants may have heard about the disease, they may not be doing enough to protect themselves from getting AIDS. The SISTA (Sisters Informing Sister about Topics on AIDS) PROJECT is a program that gives them the knowledge, skills and pride to actively protect themselves from becoming infected with the AIDS virus.
This session, entitled “Ethnic and Gender Pride” addressed the challenges and joys of being an African American woman. Facilitator Evelyn Divah Marie Williams utilized cultural and gender appropriate materials to acknowledge pride and enhance self worth in being an African American woman. Other certified facilitators for the project include Sandra Jackson, Cheryl Ballard and Annie Miles. Consuelo McCuin, Executive Director of Diversity Leadership Institute collaborated with us in this endeavor. We have partnered with Consuelo to implement SISTA and another science-based program entitled “Healthy Relationships” at the Women’s Correctional Facility. For more information, call (702) 453-3855.
