Well my friends, eight months ago I decided after a suspicious finding on my mammogram to undergo breast reconstruction. Thirteen years ago I was first diagnosed with breast cancer in my left breast and had a modified radical mastectomy. Although I’m still a little uncomfortable my two “girls” are making me feel real good about my decision to have the reconstruction done. I want to thank Jan Emanuel (Divas Ride for a Cure)for her encouraging words when the “pain of healing” became unbearable. Jan just listened to my rants and cried along with me for the moment I had my pity party. I took my first ride about two weeks ago (not rushing but if you ride you know why I had to do it) and it felt good. I won’t be riding with the DIVAS this year but I will probably see them in Kansas City for the 30th National Bikers Roundup.

I was really excited with the idea of attempting to ride across the country for breast cancer awareness with DIVAS FOR A CURE (http://www.realdivasride.com). I started checking out my trike, (Harley Davidson-Ultra Classic) on what new things I could get for her, purchasing pink shirts and even a pink sun visor with pink shoes then the word came.  I had been diagnosed with breast cancer twice and lung cancer once.  For those of you that have been through any form of cancer or any life changing diagnosis you know the feeling of what a serious diagnosis means.

A few weeks before I met with my oncologist I knew something was wrong, because I felt a lump under my arm.  "Your recent mammography examination showed a finding that requires additional imaging studies for a complete evaluation.  Most such findings are benign (not cancer)"

This quote from a recent letter I received regarding my mammpgram changed my attempt to ride.  Although the quote does not state that I had a recurrence just the idea of "requires additional imaging studies" out weighted any future planning for the trip.

As I wrote, to those that were supporting me (it saddens me, that I have to drop out of celebrating with the DIVAS) it has now dawned on me that the letter was a spiritual healing for those that needed to know you can draw strengh from those you love.

I held down the home front by sending blog notes and pictures of their stop in Vegas. On the first day that the DIVAS (and men were with them) arrived in Vegas the temperture was at least 115 degrees riding through the desert. Now thats dedication. The riders had bad weather all the way to Florida. The 8 thousand and some miles from California and back proved to be an eye opening experience. The DIVAS donated $25,000 to MD Anderson for breast cancer research.
